Hello and welcome to the third in the Little Histories series of audio.
Today's audio comes from the Devon town of Totnes. Yesterday proved to be a very warm and sunny day in this rather lovely laid back Devon town, however this morning turned out to be somewhat different and a rather overcast and chilly morning which turned to rain during the process of recording. The final part of the planned route was to be the Norman Castle above Totnes which on further investigation turned out to be locked so not quite the planned perfect ending to the early morning walk but I hope that I have managed to capture something of this Devon Delight. (Intro and Outro - Buxtehude Sonata III op.I performed by the Ensemble Vermillian - more information on the performers and music can be obtained from Magnatune at Ensemble Vermillian)

The journey starts from the River Dart stopping and looking at the once riverside warehouses, the granite memorial to William Wills where I look briefly at his life and then moves on to look at the history of the Royal Seven Stars which in it's time has served a number of purposes and has seen patronage from writer to kings. From here I travel further up the historical main street to look at the history or myth of the Brutus Stone set into the streets pavement and from here to the red sandstone church of St Mary's where I stop for a few minutes to look at the life of Charles Babbage. Further up the granite ridge that forms the foundations for the towns centre I travel through the Butterwalk and finally to the Norman Castle on the granite outcrop overlooking the town.
